Should I Always Use Synthetic Oil in My Car?

You do not need to use synthetic oil in your car all the time unless your vehicle’s manufacturer recommends it. For example, if you drive a BMW, the manufacturer recommends that you only use synthetic oil. Extra Mile Tire and Service is going to discuss the different types of motor oil below. In most cases, most automobiles run fine with conventional oil. There are times, however, when synthetic oil will do a better job of protecting the engine. Keep reading to find out more.

Conventional

As we just mentioned, there’s nothing wrong with conventional oil. In fact, this oil has been around for over 100 years. Standard engines with low miles run excellently on conventional motor oil. This oil is affordable, protective, and does an excellent job of remaining viscous provided you have it changed every 3,000 miles. When you consider how long this motor oil has been around, it’s no wonder more people use it than any other oil type. It has been proven that this oil protects engines.

High-Mileage

There may come a time, however, when you want to switch to high-mileage motor oil. This time is usually when the odometer reaches 75,000 miles. The older your car, truck, or utility vehicle’s engine is more chance you have of it springing an oil leak. The reason why many people switch to high-mileage motor oil is that this oil helps prevent engine oil leaks. There are additives in this oil that are designed to stop an oil leak before it starts.

Synthetic

As we mentioned above, if you drive a BMW or other high-performance automobile, it’s a good idea to use synthetic motor oil. Synthetic oil also stands up better to extreme weather conditions such as extreme heat or temperatures that drop below zero. Synthetic oil is man-made and contains additives to extend its life. As such, you do not need to change synthetic oil as often as you need to change conventional oil.

Synthetic Blend

The caveat with synthetic oil, however, is that it is the most expensive oil on the market. For those who are looking for the benefits of a synthetic oil with the cost of a conventional oil, you may want to try a synthetic blend. This oil is a little more expensive than conventional oil, but it is a combination of both synthetic and conventional.

Extra Mile Tire and Service in Milton, GA, would be happy to talk with you about the best motor oil for your automobile. It may be that you do need to use synthetic all the time, or you may be able to use conventional.
