If your brakes smell hot when you use them, we cannot overstate how important it is that you stop driving your car, truck, or utility vehicle. Overheating brakes will eventually fail, and you will be unable to stop your automobile. Too much heat is just one sign that your brake system is going bad. Extra Mile Tire and Service is going to list the other signs below.
ABS/Brake Warning
When you first start your vehicle, the ABS and Brake lights turn on briefly. Aside from when you have your parking brake set, this is the only time you should see these lights. If they flash or turn on steadily, you’ve got a problem with your brake system that needs immediate attention.
Strange Noises
Another sign that your brakes are overheating is squealing noises when you use them. Squealing noises can also indicate that you need to replace your brake pads. If you fail to do so, you will eventually hear scraping or grinding every time you use your brakes.
Strange Wobbling
If your vehicle wobbles when you apply the brakes, you have warped rotor surfaces. Generally, preventative maintenance recommends that you have the rotor surfaces recut every 60,000 miles. If you haven’t done so, your vehicle may wobble when you use the brakes.
Leaking Fluid
Brake fluid is light brown to dark brown in color depending on its age. Some brake fluid brands are red. If you see spots of either color on your garage floor around your tires, this is a sign that your brake fluid is leaking out of the hoses or master cylinder.
Soft Brake Pedal
Your brake pedal should never feel soft or squishy. If it sinks all the way to the floor, you have a problem with the master cylinder or air in the brake lines. This can prevent you from being able to stop your automobile, so have your vehicle towed to our shop right away.
Pulling to the Side
Finally, applying the brakes shouldn’t affect the direction in which your vehicle is headed. If it pulls to the side when you press down on the brake pedal, you have a caliper that is stuck. We can replace the faulty caliper so your automobile always heads straight when you brake.
Extra Mile Tire and Service in Milton, GA, recommends that you have your brakes inspected every 12,000 miles to make sure everything is okay. This is the most important safety system on your automobile, so make sure you take care of it at all times.
